Building 416 Refurbishment RAAF Edinburgh
RAAF Edinburgh Air Intelligence Training Unit (AITU) Building 416 Refurbishment
Client: Department of Defence, represented by Aurecon
Contract Value: $4.16 million plus GST
Completion Date: November 2020
Scope of Work: Axis was engaged to deliver a full refurbishment of Building 416 at RAAF Edinburgh, creating a fit-for-purpose facility for the Air Intelligence Training Unit (AITU).
Works included full internal demolition and rebuild, new insulated stud walls, aluminium-framed windows, lightweight partitions, fire-rated zones, acoustic treatments, structural steel supports, and complete electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic upgrades.
This also involved new MSB installation, DSN/DPN/DVN/DESN connections, and Zone 4 Type 1A security and access control systems.
Recognising the site’s cultural significance to the Kaurna people, Axis partnered with RAWsa to conduct cultural assessments and monitor excavation works, including 120m of trenching for new power infrastructure.
Axis proactively addressed structural limitations in the existing purlins and applied learnings from similar projects to meet Zone 4 compliance. Unexpected asbestos discoveries were safely managed through thorough testing and collaboration with licensed contractors. Delays due to third-party ICT equipment removal were mitigated through revised work sequencing, ensuring the project stayed on track.
